Hemoglobin is a globular alosteric protein which is very crucial in transporting oxygen molecules to the whole body system through the blood stream. Consisting of 4 subunits (2 alpha chains and 2 beta chains), this protein molecule is capable to carry 87 times more oxygen molecules compare with other protein carriers. Meaning that, without hemoglobin the blood needs to circulate the systemic and pulmonary circulation 87 times more in order to meet the requirement of oxygen by the body. Phew! Thank GOD we have this hemoglobin..
